Ways To Reduce Constipation During Pregnancy

A woman's body goes through many changes when expecting; some of which are not so pleasant, like constipation. Believe me, you are not alone, but understanding why women get constipated and discovering ways to reduce constipation during pregnancy will help you have a smooth and happy journey into motherhood.

Why Am I Constipated?

Constipation is not uncommon when a woman becomes pregnant and, believe it or not, this less than desirable condition does have a purpose. During pregnancy, progesterone causes the muscles of the large bowel to become lax. Even though it is uncomfortable, constipation happens for a reason; to allow food to stay in the digestive tract longer so your little one can get more nutrients.

Constipation during pregnancy is at its worse in the first trimester, but this does not mean you must endure three months of this agony. There are a number of ways to prevent or at least reduce your symptoms of constipation.

Food to Avoid

There are certain food that should be avoided during pregnancy as they clog up your digestive tract. Pasta, cereal, breads and products containing baking soda or baking powder should be limited. White sugar, white flour, and white rice are a no-no as they all expand when digested thus producing a big roadblock. Processed food and dairy products can also contribute to constipation.

Vegetables containing high amounts of protein tend to produce symptoms as well as meals containing high-fat content should be avoided. Breaded or deep-fried food, cheese dishes, sausages, creamy sauces and snacks containing large quantities of sugar can contribute to constipation.

Food to Help Regular Bowel Movements

I am sure you have heard many times, even before you became pregnant that fibre is good for you. Whole grain cereals, dried fruits such as apricots, peaches, and even prunes are good for your digestive tract.

Raw or slightly cooked vegetables, nuts and seeds work wonders to keep you regular. If you must eat bread or rice, opt for whole grain bread or brown rice.

If you are going to change your diet to reduce and/or eliminate certain food, take it slow. Your body may react to intestinal food shock if you quit cold turkey and you do not want stomach upset added to constipation during pregnancy. Try eating several smaller meals in place of three large ones. Overeating contributes to gas and bloating; two other undesirable symptoms.

Wash Constipation Away

Everyone says water consumption is important; eight glasses a day in fact. Well, in addition to water, adding vegetable and fruit juices to your diet will help soften your stool. Hot water with a bit of lemon or even the old glass of prune juice will help as well.

Pregnancy should be a happy time for you so do not let symptoms of constipation steal your joy. Watch what you eat, eliminate foods that contribute to constipation during pregnancy, drink plenty of fluids, and exercise regularly. No one ever said becoming a mommy would be easy, but you can have a healthy and happy pregnancy once you get rid of the constipation.
